The Tree of Life: An Artistic Journey of Reflection

The Tree of Life: An Artistic Journey of Reflection

Sometimes, the most meaningful professional development doesn’t begin with a presentation; it begins with a blank sheet of paper and the courage to look inward.

Last week, I had the privilege of facilitating the Tree of Life & Ikigai workshop for a wonderful group of educators.

We gathered indoors, because of the extreme weather, and used watercolor, storytelling, and guided reflection to explore questions that often get overlooked in our busy lives:

  • What are the roots that sustain us?
  • What strengths do we bring to others?
  • What dreams are still growing within us?
  • What is our reason for being?

What happened next was something I could never have planned.

As participants painted, reflected, and some ot them shared their stories, the atmosphere transformed. There were moments of silence, deep listening, heartfelt conversations… and a few tears. Not tears of sadness, but of recognition, those rare moments when we reconnect with ourselves and realize how much we carry, how much we’ve grown, and how much we still have to offer.

Experiences like this remind me that art is far more than a creative activity. It is a language that helps us slow down, reflect, build trust, and create genuine human connections.

I am deeply grateful to the entire team at the Committee for Hispanic Children & Families for welcoming me with such kindness and generosity. Every detail reflected the care they have for their educators, and it was an honor to contribute to a day dedicated to those who devote their lives to caring for others.

This workshop reaffirmed something I believe deeply: When we nurture the person behind the professional, everyone grows.
